A Wedding DJ's Guide to The Resort at Pelican Hill

The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast is Orange County luxury at its most cinematic: Italian-inspired architecture, Pacific Ocean views, and spaces that feel like a European getaway without the passport. I'm Joe, the DJ behind DJ MOJOE. I've performed at more than 150 Southern California venues, and I DJed Heidi and Seth's wedding at Pelican Hill, so this guide comes from working the actual property. Here's what to know.

What makes Pelican Hill special for a wedding?

It's the closest Southern California gets to a coastal Italian villa. The architecture, the ocean light, and the service level all say five-star before a single vendor arrives. For couples who want a wedding that feels like a destination without asking guests to fly, Pelican Hill is the shortlist.

The spaces are the story: the rotunda for your ceremony, outdoor terraces for cocktail hour, and rooms like La Capella for the reception. Each space has its own personality, and your music should match each one.

What is the rotunda ceremony like?

Unforgettable. The rotunda sits behind the resort overlooking the Pacific, and it frames your ceremony like a painting. At Heidi and Seth's wedding, harpist Lily Press played the ceremony beside a petal-lined aisle, and they sealed their vows with a release of white doves over the ocean backdrop. That's the level of moment this venue invites. Their day ran on a strong team, too: Pure Lavish Events planned it, with photography by Katrina Jayne and video by Alex Orlina.

If you're bringing live musicians for the ceremony, your DJ should coordinate with them on timing and handoffs so the transition from live music to announcements to cocktail hour feels like one continuous experience.

How should cocktail hour and the reception flow?

Pelican Hill rewards a light touch. Heidi and Seth's cocktail hour ran on the outdoor patio just below La Capella: a discreet speaker setup, background music at a level that let conversation and ocean air lead. Inside La Capella, the reception was elegant and intimate, with details the bride designed herself. Dinner stayed relaxed, with chill music underneath the conversation, and the dancing arrived later in the night, right when the room was ready for it.

That pacing is a real strategy for intimate luxury weddings: let the early evening breathe, then build. A DJ who pushes club energy at 6 pm is fighting the room. A DJ who reads it builds a better night, and my current rig, Meyer Sound ULTRA-X40 loudspeakers with Shure wireless microphones, keeps even the quiet hours sounding rich and clear.

What about the setup in an elegant room?

Keep it invisible. In a room like La Capella, the equipment footprint should be small and tucked to the side so the design work stays the visual star. Great sound from a setup nobody notices: that's the standard a venue like this deserves.
