A Wedding DJ's Guide to Calamigos Ranch

Oak canopies, string lights in the trees, and a woodsy, whimsical mood make it one of Southern California's most loved wedding settings. I'm Joe, the DJ behind DJ MOJOE. I've performed at more than 150 Southern California venues, and I've DJed at Calamigos many times across its different spaces, so this guide comes from working the actual property. Here is what to know.

What makes Calamigos Ranch special for a wedding?

It is a ranch, not a ballroom, and that is the whole appeal. The setting does the heavy lifting: mature oaks, a waterfall, and twinkling lights that come alive after dark. The mood is relaxed and natural, the kind of place where guests settle in and stay on the dance floor. For couples who want a Malibu wedding that feels like a retreat without asking everyone to travel, Calamigos is near the top of the shortlist.

Which space at Calamigos should you choose?

Calamigos has four distinct wedding spaces: the Oak Room, the Redwood Room, the North Pavilion, and the Birchwood Room. Each has its own character, so the right pick depends on your guest count and the feel you want.

The Birchwood Room is my favorite and the most intimate of the four. Mark and Miranda chose it for a close celebration of under 100 guests, and it fit them perfectly: ceremony by the waterfall, dinner under the trees, and dancing up on the deck, all in one tucked-away pocket of the property. Whichever space you choose, plan your ceremony flow and your sound around that specific room rather than the venue in general.

What is the ceremony like, and what about the waterfall?

The waterfall is one of Calamigos' most beautiful features, and it is also the real challenge to plan around. It adds constant background noise that can bury your vows and your officiant if the sound is not handled well.

Here is how I manage it. I use a directional handheld Shure microphone held close, so voices carry clearly over the water, and I run a full sound check before a single guest arrives. When a couple has two officiants, as Mark and Miranda did, each one gets a wireless mic. One tip worth raising with the venue: ask whether the waterfall flow can be slowed during the ceremony. This matters for your videographer too, because water noise in the background is very hard to clean out of vow audio afterward. The goal is simple: every guest hears every word.

How does a wedding day flow at Calamigos?

Mark and Miranda's Birchwood day is a good template. The ceremony was by the waterfall, cocktail hour ran on the lawn, dinner was set under the trees with the lights glowing overhead, and dancing moved up to the deck. Because those moments happen in different areas, I run two setups, one for the ceremony and cocktail hour and a second for the reception, so nothing depends on moving gear mid-event. The upper deck has a ramp, which quietly saves a lot of time when it is time to transition.

Watch your timeline against the venue's music cutoff. Mark and Miranda started at 5:00 with an 11:00 cutoff, which gave us about five hours. Knowing that number early tells you exactly how much room you have for the toasts, the dances, and the open floor, so nothing gets rushed at the end of the night.

What about music and sound in an open-air venue?

Two things matter most outdoors: clean coverage and a live hand on the music. For the ceremony and cocktail hour I mix the music live rather than running a set playlist, so the mood builds naturally instead of jumping between tracks. Across an open-air ranch, the sound system has to be sized to the space so the back of the room hears the same full, clear sound as the front.

For the reception, small touches make the room feel like the couple. Uplighting around the space can shift and move with the music once the dancing starts, and I put together a personalized photo slideshow from photos the couple sends ahead, so the visuals feel like them and not a template. Between the lights in the trees and a floor that stays full, Birchwood after dark is hard to beat.
